"It’s just something that’s there, something that’s keeping you synced in."
Sean Hurwitz is the lead guitarist for Smash Mouth and Enrique Iglesias. He has also had the pleasure of sharing both stage and studio with artists including Gin Blossoms, Chris Wallace, and many more.
On the importance of using a metronome
In Smash Mouth, there are only two people that are getting click – it's the drummer and myself. I just want to be synced in; I love having something keeping me locked in.
With Enrique, 90 percent of the stuff is on click. Not to track, but with click to ensure that everyone's playing together. There are 10 musicians on stage – it's a pop show, but it's a rock show, and we're performing hard and we need to be locked in.
I'm very lucky with Smash Mouth and with Enrique – I have two incredible drummers. With Smash Mouth I play with Jason Sutter and with Enrique I play with Van Romaine. Very different drummers, but both locked into a click and it really helps me do my job.
For instance, if there is a period where we all have to come in on the 1, but it's silence right before it...you don't need the old school high hat counting eighth notes or quarter notes. Everyone's on count, you can hear it, and I feel like it's a lot more professional.
